Marketing scenario
What this scenario gives you
More returns from inactive segments, a cleaner email list, and better separation of customers worth recovering from contacts to sunset.
For customers without purchases for a defined period, subscribers without clicks, former seasonal buyers, and segments with declining activity.
When it is worth using
- Stores with a large base of historical customers.
- Brands working on retention and list hygiene.
- Teams wanting reactivation without constant discounting.
When to skip it
Do not send win-back to users without consent, after unsubscribe, or after long inactivity without a sunset plan. Protect domain reputation over volume.
Implementation plan
How to set it up
Define inactivity
Decide whether inactivity means no purchase, no click, no visit, or lower frequency. Different inactivity types need different copy.
Give a real reason to return
It can be a new collection, better offer, changed product, loyalty benefit, or reminder of a previously bought category.
Plan contact sunset
If the customer does not react, reduce sends or move them to a sunset segment. This protects deliverability.
Segment
Inactive customers are not one group
Inactivity can mean different things. After 60 days, the customer may simply wait for the next purchase cycle. After a year without clicks, sender reputation becomes a risk. Start win-back segmentation with time, value, and last category.
- Separate no purchase from no clicks.
- Prioritize high-LTV customers.
- Match the offer to the last purchased category.
Offer
The reason to return must be stronger than we miss you
“We miss you” is pleasant, but rarely sells. The return reason should be concrete: sizes are back, a new line launched, delivery improved, the category was restocked, or the customer receives a return benefit.
- Show what is new since the last visit.
- Do not start with the maximum discount.
- For former customers, use a specific category.
Deliverability
Win-back should also clean the list
Win-back also keeps the list clean. If a customer does not open, click, or buy after several reasonable attempts, reduce sends or sunset the contact instead of pushing volume with little revenue chance.
- Measure unsubscribes and no-response.
- Limit the sequence to a few emails.
- After no response, reduce frequency.
Measurement
What to measure after launch
Evaluate the scenario by shopper behavior and cart impact, not by impressions alone. These metrics help you see whether the campaign supports revenue or only creates activity.
- reactivated clicks
- orders from win-back segment
- unsubscribes and complaints after campaign
- LTV of recovered customers
